Why Beauty Product Advertisements Shoule Be Banned

In this modern society, advertisements are very influential. We can see advertisements everywhere; from the television commercials, newspaper, magazine, on the streets, and internet. We are unconsciously impacted by those advertisements. “Advertising is considered by many people as threat for the cultures identity and moreover it also affects and changes people’s lifestyles...According to Fletcher (2010) pressure group such as NGO’s, they believe alcohol advertising increases the intake of alcohol among people, diseases and medicine ads develop health phobia among which make them worry about their health all the time. This clearly shows that advertisement is also creating negative impacts on people.” (Baig and others, 2013) When it comes to beauty product advertising, it also has negative effects on consumers, especially young girls and women. Beauty product advertisements should be banned for the following reasons.

First, those advertisements are sometimes sexist and prejudicial. Many advertisements promote that white skin is beautiful. On television commercials, they promote their product by using girls with bright skin to be the models. We often see the beauty product advertisements on television compare two girls; one with bright skin and another with darker skin. They show that the girl with dark skin worries about her skin color, and having dark skin is not attractive. It is a problem that has to be solved. After the girl uses their product, her skin is lighter, and as they try to convince, she is more beautiful when her skin is bright. These advertisements create a prejudiced society, where women are more beautiful with lighter skin.

Second, beauty product advertisements lower consumers’ self-esteem. When people see those advertisements, they lose confidence because they do not have the same kind of beauty like the models do.They start to compare themselves with the models in the advertisements and become unhappy. Chao-Yuan Tsen, the Secretary General of the Awakening Foundation, a women's rights organization said that “The beauty industries in Taiwan emphasize different skin tones and say that if you can be as white as Japanese and western women you can be as beautiful as a cherry blossom...Promoting this kind of image that they create doesn’t make women any happier. It actually creates more anxiety”. (Olumide, 2016) The advertisements give the message that women nowadays are not beautiful enough because they are not slim, they have spots on their faces or their eyelashes are not long enough. These beauty advertisements do more harm than good for women and young girls.

Opponents of a ban argue that beauty product advertising creates jobs. Banning it is a violation of the principle of free market. It creates jobs, yes, but the beauty industry also promotes white skin. For this purpose, I cannot and will not support an industry that is biased towards different skin tones, and the personal feelings of others. We do not support illegal drugs, prostitution, and child labor, which are all part of free market, because they are bad in many ways. If we follow that ‘it creates jobs’, we should allow illegal drug industry because it creates jobs as well. Hence, we also should not support the beauty industry for its views because they are bad. They promote awful messages to people and are mainly for women.

In conclusion, we should ban beauty product advertisements. The reasons are that they are prejudicial and affect consumers’ self-esteem. They create prejudice in society and make people unhappy. We should stop supporting this advertising and accept that everyone is unique and beautiful in their own way. We should rather promote self-acceptance and self-respect than promote these messages in the beauty advertisements.
